MY FRIEND's STORY
Have you been around the block a few times and have a great life story to tell? Or perhaps you have a parent, friend or a client in aged care who has some inspiring experiences to share? Shannon Benton from My Friend’s Story is a biographer who knows how to discover the ‘gems’ of an elder’s life and share it.
The therapeutic term for this service is ‘Reminiscence Therapy’. Capturing, writing and sharing your story has multiple proven benefits:
IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE
Greater sense of value of their life contribution raises self-esteem.
HEEDS DEMENTIA PROCESS
Recall of life milestones and highlights heeds progress from early stage of dementia
Sharing the story fast-tracks positive relationships & a sense of community.
But My friend’s Story is reminiscense therapy with three key differences:
1. FACILITATED BY A HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL
Shannon Benton is a health care professional so the process of getting the story is a therapeutic process, as is having the story.
2. ONLINE ACCESS
Having the stories available online via the My Friend’s Story website (with the storyteller’s permission) means that friends and family can easily access the story.
3. GRAPHIC RECORDING OPTION
In conjunction with Shannon, graphic recorder, Alex Wegner, can also create the story as a visual graphic. This happens as they are telling their story – something that can be hung on the wall proudly. More about Alex Wegner
