JOHN TURIER
SCULPTOR & PUBLIC ART PRACTITIONER

John Turier is one of Newcastle’s most successful artists, having a diverse career that spans 30 years. Underpinning the majority of Turier’s work is an accessible poetic narrative. His works span an intriguing combination of figurative, minimal, mechanical and abstract form. Turier is also a practicing songwriter and musician
PUBLIC ART PROJECTS
John has completed over 20 public sculpture projects including design and consultation work on the Healing Gardens at the SAN’S Hospital Wahroonga Sydney 2014, ‘Foundation Seed’, a popular landmark sculpture, which is the tallest piece of public art in the Newcastle CBD, standing 14 metres high and located in King St West, and ‘Aeolian Tree’ (2001) in the sculpture park at Lake Macquarie Art Gallery. Other public art projects include: City Gateway West End Public Art Project, Newcastle (2007); Casuarina Sculpture Commission, Tweed Heads, NSW (2004); Five Sculptures- New Pathology Wing, John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle (2001); Sound Panels, Charlestown Bypass (2001); Take Rest-sculptural seating, Newcastle City Council (1999); and The Four Elements, Kooragang Island Installation, Newcastle City Council (1997).
WORKING WITH COMMUNITY
John has been teaching at Newcastle Art School since the early 90’s. His extensive experience in teaching allows him an easy transition to consulting and engaging with community groups for public art projects. He has run 5 student-based public art projects involving private and government patronage through Newcastle Art School. He has been teaching Certificate 2 and 3 in Aboriginal studies at Newcastle Art School and has run workshops for a variety of different schools and other community groups for the last two decades.
EXHIBITIONS
His work has been widely acclaimed and he has completed many solo and group exhibitions mainly in Sydney galleries such as King Street Gallery (Sydney) and Coventry Gallery (Sydney). He has also exhibited work at the MCA (Sydney) and other regional galleries including Gold Coast Regional Art Gallery, Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, Lake Macquarie Art Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Newcastle Art Gallery. His exhibited artworks combine the media of sculpture, painting and drawing.
EDUCATION
John began his adult life as a plumber, but by his early 30s had decided to enrol in a Bachelor of Visual Arts at The University of Newcastle. With John’s trade background of tool usage and building forms, sculpture came naturally to him. As his artistic career progressed, he also embarked on the challenge of painting.
