PUBLIC ART PRACTITIONER & SCULPTOR
Gavin Vitullo’s sculptural works often cause those who pass by to stop and ‘double-take’. An oxygen tank or paper plane carved from timber, for example, are surprising illusions that are enjoyed by all walks of life. Other sculptural works with curious carved markings may pull a person in to look more closely. Or simply to come closer and connect with the alluring natural textures of his work.
RECLAIMED & SUSTAINABLE
Gavin has an affinity with reclaimed, salvaged and sustainable materials. He has an innate understanding of the natural world and this often resonates through wood, as concept and craftsmanship are harmoniously combined. The materials used in Vitullo’s work include wood, stone and concrete. The surfaces are sometimes charred, burnt, naturally weathered, and hammered or sculpted into form.
Gavin is most recognised for his work in sculpture, having been awarded first prize on consecutive occasions in the Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize for sculpture. He has also been a finalist in the Gosford Art Prize 5 times, and in 2016 won the Hunter Region Botanical Gardens sculpture prize. In 2017 Gavin s first public sculpture ‘Undercurrent’ was installed at Billy’s Point, Teralba. That same year Gavin was awarded first prize at Sculptures in the Vineyard, Wollombi for his contemplative work ‘Breathe’.
